Smart Options - Solar Hot Water FAQ's

Questions and Answers

Is installation expensive?

The Solco Genius requires only two plumbing fittings, so it is easier and cheaper to install than other systems. It also weighs 110kg when empty and only 405kg when full. Some other brands weigh up to 750kg when full and require bracing of the roof before they can be installed.

Your Solco distributor mailto:david@smartoptions.com.au can organise an installation quote for you.

Who is Solco?

Solco Ltd is a listed company on the Australian Stock Exchange with share capitalisation of 7.5 million dollars so you can be assured we will be around for many years to come.

Solco Ltd has been producing solar hot water systems since 1988, and are the leading Australian owned producer of a polymer based non-rust, non-corrosion solar hot water system.

Do I need to boost the Solco Genius?

As a rule of thumb, the Solco Genius will heat your water to double the ambient air temperature + 6 degrees. On a 25degC clear summer day, the water will be heated to 56degC, so no boosting will be necessary. On a cold winter day of around 15degC, the Solco Genius will raise the water temperature to around 36degC, meaning you will need a booster to lift it to 50degC. However, it is still much more efficient than an electric or gas water heater, which has to raise the water from around 15degC.

The Solco Genius can be boosted by electricity, or a wood-fired stove as standard. The electric booster can be set to operate only when the water falls below your desired temperature and it is rated at only 2.4kw so its annual operating costs are minimal. A gas booster is optional and can be quoted by the Solco distributor.

Is there a choice of colours?

The Solco Genius can be rotationally moulded in a variety of colours to match most colourbond or tile roofs.

How environmentally friendly is the Solco Genius?

Replacing an electric storage unit with a Solco Genius will save between 3 and 4.5 tonnes of greenhouse gas production a year. In addition, polyethylene is a fully recyclable material, so the unit can be recycled at the end of its useful life.
